- 3 cups Navy beans soaked overnight
- 200 grams Bacon chopped
- 1 large Onion finely chopped
- ¼ cup Molasses
- ½ cup Brown sugar
- 1 cup Tomato sauce
- 1 tbsp Mustard powder
- 2 tbsp Apple cider vinegar
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp Salt
- ½ tsp Black pepper
- As needed Water
Step 1 – Prepare the Beans
Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C).
In a large oven-proof pot, fry the bacon over medium heat until it starts to crisp.
Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent.
Note: Frying the bacon before adding the beans infuses the dish with a smoky flavor that’s absolutely irresistible!
Step 2 – Mix the Ingredients
To the pot, add molasses, brown sugar, tomato sauce, mustard powder, apple cider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce.
Stir well to combine all the ingredients. Season with salt and pepper.
Warning: Ensure that all sugar is dissolved to prevent it from burning during baking.
Step 3 – Bake the Beans
Add the pre-soaked beans to the pot and pour in enough water to cover the beans by about an inch.
Stir everything together and bring to a simmer.
Cover the pot with a lid and transfer it to the oven.
Bake for about 2 hours or until the beans are tender and the sauce has thickened.
Fact: Slow cooking the beans allows them to absorb the flavors better, making your baked beans even more delicious.
- For a vegetarian version, skip the bacon and use a bit of smoked paprika for that smoky flavor.
