Cutting board
Sharp knife
Measuring cups and spoons
- 1.5 pounds Round steak
- 1/4 cup All-purpose flour
- 1 tsp Paprika
- 2 tbsp Cooking oil
- 2 medium Onions sliced
- 2 cloves Garlic minced
- 14.5 oz can Diced tomatoes
- 1 cup Beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp Dried thyme
- To taste Salt and pepper
Step 1 – Prepare the Steak
Trim any excess fat from the steak and use a meat tenderizer to pound it to about 1/2 inch thickness.
Season the flour with paprika, salt, and pepper, and coat the steak evenly.
A good pounding not only tenderizes the meat but also helps the flour stick, creating a fantastic crust that will lock in all the juices.
Step 2 – Brown the Steak
Heat the oil in your Dutch oven over medium-high heat.
Add the steak, working in batches if necessary, and sear until golden brown on both sides.
Searing the steak enhances its flavor through caramelization.
Step 3 – Sauté the Vegetables
Step 4 – Deglaze and Simmer
Return the steak to the pot. Add diced tomatoes, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme.
Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer, cover, and let cook for about 1.5 hours, or until the steak is tender.
Letting the dish simmer slowly will meld the flavors beautifully.
- For a thicker sauce, remove the lid in the last 30 minutes of cooking to reduce the liquid.
- If the sauce is too thin, mix a tablespoon of cornstarch with water and stir into the simmering pot.
